Dante swallows, his stare jumping between me and Matteo. He seems a little lost at the moment, and every bit of me wants to pull his massive body to mine and comfort him. “Dante, please,” I nearly plead with a sorrowful whisper and reach my hand out to him. He jumps back from my touch as if I’d burn him. His irises churn with a storm brewing as he gives me one last, long look. It’s like he’s trying to see into my heart, hoping to discover he has a reason to fight for me. Unfortunately, he doesn’t, as it’s always been Matteo for me, from the very moment I saw him in the club out in Milan. I wanted him then and I want him now, even more than before.

“No,” Dante rumbles at me, full of emotion, and turns, locking his stare on the Capo. “I need some space, some time to regroup and breathe.”

The oldest nods, almost as if he was expecting the request. “Of course. Take a week, and if you need longer, call me.”

“Grazie,” Dante mutters and stands, spinning on his heel to heed his exit. He’s out the door without a backward glance in my direction. I won’t lie, it stings. He’s so fierce; he makes me feel safe whenever he’s near, and now he’s left so quickly. I don’t want him to fight it. I never wanted to bruise their relationship, but damn, he didn’t even utter a good-bye after everything.

Matteo regards me with sympathy. I was expecting more victory shining in its place, but the cockiness is nowhere to be seen at the moment. “You’ll have to excuse him, mia fiore. It appears as if my brother was falling in love with you. It’s better this way. He’ll see that soon enough.”

How can he know this? It’s as if Matteo is much older than his actual age at times. Tears crest at my husband’s admission. Dante was falling in love? With me? How is he aware of Dante’s feelings and yet I wasn’t? I had no idea. “Are you certain?” I question after pausing for a moment in my thoughts.

He nods. “It’s always a possibility when it comes to the tradition. That’s why it usually only lasts the first night. With you it was different. We had to pace ourselves, be easy on you.”

A drop falls over my cheek, but I quickly swipe it away. I hate it that there’s a possibility that I’ve hurt Dante in some way. I swallow, hoping to choke back a bit of the emotions. I’m supposed to be strong, damn it, remember? My spine straightens a bit, even if I don’t feel as resilient as I need to be at the moment. No wonder they built this house so damn big; there was a chance for one of the queens falling in love with multiple men, and of course, they’d all live in the same place. How had I
